Tanka Poem Yamagata Aritomo had written in memory of the late ITO Hirobumi, Yamagata’s dear and long-time dear friend.

Mr Prime Minister, no other verse encapsulates my thoughts as well as that poem.

The friend I spent innumerable hours with,

immersed in deep discussions

has now left me behind.

How can I live my own life

or further the life of the nation

from this day forth?

I am beset by an all-consuming sadness and an overwhelming sense of loss

Mr Prime Minister, thankyou very much from the bottom of my heart.
